Thesis project for the Master’s Degree in Visual and Innovation Design. Tumultum is a variable font designed to make noise pollution problems visible.

concept
In physics, sound is represented by a movement in space, an oscillation, made by particles, caused by vibratory movements coming from a specific object, the source of the sound. The source transmits its movement to adjacent particles which, in turn, transmit it to other nearby particles, causing a local variation in pressure, which allows a simple vibratory movement to propagate mechanically, giving rise to a sound wave, represented by a longitudinal wave.
With these bases we can understand that different types of sounds create different sound waves, whose movements create a sort of visual rhythm.



interactive prototype
A typeface that changes together with the levels of noise pollution and which highlights the persistence of surrounding noises which are often hidden by habit and our body’s defense mechanisms.
In order to show how the font actually works in relation to an external sound input I designed a working prototype, using the JavaScript programming language, in combination with HTML and CSS, as the language that supported variable fonts the most at the time.
Thus obtaining a character that varies in real time based on the noise.
